Some commentators have honed in on the substance of the two films, arguing that "Brokeback" was too gay and too shocking in its interpretation on the iconic American cowboy. "Crash," they argue, was more comfortable for older Academy voters because it was set in Hollywood's hometown, featured a large (and therefore influential) ensemble cast, and yet still dealt with an important and controversial social issue: race rather than sexual orientation. Others have taken a more quantitative look, pointing out how almost unheard of it is for a movie to earn so many pre-Oscar nominations and awards as "Brokeback Mountain" and not go on to win Best Picture.
